Hate Crime Defined:
Under Penal Code 422.55 a hate crime is a criminal act committed in whole or in part because of the victim’s actual or perceived characteristics such as race, religion, sexual orientation, or other protected traits. Crime is motivated by a bias against the following characteristics: Gender, Religious, Sexual orientation, Race, Ethnicity, and National origin.
