Los Angeles – Today, St. John’s Community Health celebrates the passage of Measure CC in the Compton Community College District, Measure A at the Los Angeles County level, and Prop 35 at the state level – three pieces of legislation that will have a significant impact on vulnerable communities served by the public health network.
In addition to funding infrastructure and technological repairs and updates, Measure CC will fund a 24/7 urgent care and community health center on Compton College’s campus, providing much-needed medical access for students, faculty, and the surrounding community. St. John’s Community Health will operate the urgent care facility.
Measure A will raise an estimated $1.1 billion per year for efforts to address the acute housing and homelessness crisis in Los Angeles County. This pot of money is critical in providing rental and home ownership assistance as well as vital services for children, families, veterans, domestic violence survivors, seniors, and disabled people experiencing homelessness. The influx of funding from Measure A could provide greater access to mental health and substance use services, benefiting underserved populations who rely on community health centers like St. John’s Community Health for holistic care.
Prop 35 will provide funding for Medi-Cal by making permanent the current tax on managed health insurance plans, guaranteeing health care for nearly 15 million Californians for the long term and preventing the state from redirecting funds to non-health care purposes. Prop 35 will result in grant programs for organizations like St. John’s Community Health.
“We must continue to focus on efforts that materially impact the everyday lives of marginalized people,” said Jim Mangia, president and CEO of St. John’s Community Health. “Measures A and CC and Prop 35 all provide critical funding that will save lives. We look forward to utilizing the resources provided by this legislation to better serve our most vulnerable neighbors.
“We also insist the federal government prioritize protecting the Affordable Care Act over the next few months to protect the countless people who would suffer immeasurably if it was gutted. Legislation like Measures A and CC and Prop 35 are only impactful if community health centers exist.”
